How to use a dry brush

Get the most out of your Elm Organics dry brush

Dry brushing is one of the most effective ways to exfoliate the skin and activate our lymphatic system, which can help your body metabolize toxins more efficiently.

Dry brushing minimizes swelling caused by fluid retention in the body. Studies also show that regular dry brushing reduces the appearance of cellulite.

But - to achieve this, and get the most out of your body brush, it is important that you dry brush correctly.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN...

Two little rules

1. Always dry brush on completely dry skin. Avoid brushing on abrasions, open wounds or cuts in the skin.

2. Always dry brush following the lymphatic system - towards the heart, and towards the lymph nodes.

See illustration, where the circles illustrate the body's lymph nodes.

Step by step

Dry brushing is a fantastic wellness routine that takes 1-3 minutes. We recommend dry brushing 2-3 times a week to start, then build up the frequency. Elm Organics Founder, Linn Stokke, does it every single day before her morning shower.

STEP 1

Feet & legs

Start with your feet and brush with even, gentle strokes upwards towards the lymph nodes in your groin.

You don't need to press hard, as the brush is effective at exfoliating even with light pressure.

STEP 2

Stomach & chest

Continue with light, loving strokes from the navel down towards the groin. Above the navel, brush up towards the heart (see illustration).

Be extra careful when brushing the skin on your chest, as it is thinner and often more sensitive.

Don't forget the neck - brush light strokes down towards the collarbone.

STEP 3

Hands & arms

From your hands, brush with light strokes up and towards the lymph nodes in your armpits.

STEP 4

Back

Not the easiest area, but just as important as anywhere else. Brush upwards towards the heart - as best you can.

STEP 5

Shower or bath

After dry brushing your skin, it's time to jump in the shower or take a bath, and rinse off the dead skin cells.

Make sure you don't shower in water that is too hot. Water that is too hot affects our skin barrier - it removes the skin's natural oils.

We encourage you to try an ice shower! It awakens the senses and has several known health benefits.

STEP 6

Finish with rich moisture

On freshly brushed skin, the pores are open, and the skin is therefore extra receptive to what you put on it. Think pure, natural products that your skin will enjoy.

Our Hand & Body Cream is a nourishing and moisturizing cream, filled with natural ingredients such as organic Shea butter and Aloe Vera, as well as natural vitamin E.

Seal your moisturizer with golden drops of organic oil. Marvellous Oil Blend is our sun-ready bestseller and a favorite among many. It restores skin's moisture balance, leaving skin with a radiant glow.
